Spring Training Overview

http://www.foxsportsarizona.com/common/medialib/271/581278.jpg

I been watching some of the Angels spring training game and I been enjoying watching some of the Angels young players. Some of the good signs I'm been noticing that Pare Bourjous has been very good reading the ball in the field and also seems like he is getting more comfortable on the plate. Also I like what Mark Trumbo is doing with the bat he is able to turn on the ball nicely but also take the ball to right center when he needs to.

Trout is looking to get a new contract

http://img.bleacherreport.net/img/images/photos/002/161/779/151746958_crop_exact.jpg?w=650&h=440&q=75

The Angels and Mike Trout are negotiating a new contract for 2013 season, however, it wont be a 10 year $25 million contract but he might be making just a little more then the league minimum of $490,000. You might be thinking why? The reason is that Mike Trout will be under team control for a few more years which means the Angels don't really need to agree with Trout to be able to sign him, Angels just need to offer Trout the major minimum and he will need to sign with them with or with out his signature. Seems unfair but the league is trying to give players with service time in the league more leverage then up and coming players.

However, I really hope the Angels give Mike Trout a pretty good raise at least a $1million contract so he wont hold this negotiations against the Angels when both sides are ready for a contract extension.

I really like how Trout knows his time will come he is not worried about his the contract.

TEMPE, Ariz.—It’s not the preferred outcome of a contract negotiation for either side, but it is one the Angels and Mike Trout appear headed for.

The 2012 American League rookie of the year and most valuable player runner-up and the team are far enough apart in talks over his 2013 salary that Trout expects to have his contract “renewed” on Saturday at a figure the Angels set, not one the 21-year-old phenom agrees to.

“You could easily put yourself in a bad mood about it, but that’s not me,” Trout said before Thursday’s workout. “I like to play baseball. I’m going to try to win a World Series for the team and not worry about off-the-field things.”

Players with less than three years of major league service have virtually no leverage, and most will make close to the major league minimum, which rose from $480,000 in 2012 to $490,000 this season.
If a player and team can’t agree on a figure, the team can renew the player at a salary at or above the minimum, an outcome that can ruffle the feathers of some players and their agents but doesn’t always cause contention.

Derek Jeter was renewed after winning rookie of the year in 1996, but the New York Yankees more than tripled his salary, from $130,000 to $550,000. Ryan Howard was renewed in 2007 after winning rookie of the year in 2005 and MVP in 2006, but the Phillies more than doubled his pay, from $355,000 to $900,000.

Most salary bumps for rookies of the year are in the 15%-20% range, but few also finish among top MVP vote getters, which makes Trout a little more exceptional.

The closest comparable for Trout may be Angels first baseman Albert Pujols, the former St. Louis slugger who won rookie of the year and finished fourth in MVP voting in 2001. The Cardinals and Pujols agreed to terms in 2002 for $600,000, twice what he made in 2001.

The Angels and Trout’s agent have not begun discussing a multi-year deal. Trout will probably make a salary closer to the major league minimum than $1 million this season; his salary will jump considerably when he reaches arbitration in 2015.

“I have to go out there, put up some numbers and not worry about that other stuff,” Trout said. “My time will come.” (LA Times)

Vernon Wells plans to retire after 2014

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef014e87f550b5970d-800wi

I feel like Vernon Wells would not have many options after his contract is over in 2014. I don't think he will try to get another contract because mostly it will be a minor league contract which will be a huge cut from his current contract. So I feel even if Wells would not want to retire after the 2014 season, I feel like he will be force to.

However, I do like that him and Hunter are planing to team up to get their own team because I feel like they will make a very good team and they will be able to out a nice team together.

Angels outfielder Vernon Wells plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season because he wants to spend more time with his family, he told reporters Monday.
"My kids," Wells said, via MLB.com. "It'll be time to invest more in their lives. I've gone through this for long enough. My thoughts right now as a family is to be done after two years, enjoy them, get to be there for them in those years where they're going to need their dad every day, not just every now and then."

Wells has two boys, ages 10 and 7.

Though Wells is only 34 years old, the timing of his planned retirement is no coincidence. He's set to make $21 million in both 2013 and 2014, so if he retired now he'd leave over $40 million on the table. Instead, Wells will play out the deal and make the entirety of his contract for his family. Once he finishes the 2014 season, Wells will have made well into nine figures in his lucrative career.

Wells hit .230/.279/.403 with 11 homers and 29 RBI in 262 plate appearances last season. He's been incredibly unpopular and the butt of many jokes in his time with the Angels, due to his gargantuan salary, sub-par play and the fact that the Angels traded Mike Napoli to acquire him.

The fact remains, though, that Wells is a three-time All-Star with three Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger and a career .273/.321/.467 line in the bigs. He's hit 259 homers and driven home 908 runs. That's a quality career, regardless of the malign. (CBS)

Trout Making His Presents Known

2012 ROY was making his mark during Spring Training but not only on the field but out of the field.
Mike Trout, David Carpenter, Michael Kohn and Travis Witherspoon brought school supplies and toys to Children First Academy, a Tempe charter school for underprivileged and homeless kids.

This makes me happy to hear because it really makes a big impact to those kids when they see this players coming and helping them out. The kids might know who Trout is but they will appreciate the help that they are doing for them. Hope Trout keep doing that through out his career.

READ ARTICLE:

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Hours before Mike Trout singled in his first at-bat this spring, the Los Angeles Angels' outfielder was a big hit with some kids.

Trout and teammates David Carpenter, Michael Kohn and Travis Witherspoon brought $5,000 worth of school supplies and toys Monday morning to Children First Academy, a Tempe charter school for underprivileged and homeless kids.

''After it was all over the kids ran up and gave us a big hug,'' the 20-year-old Trout said. ''Put a smile on my face and all the teammates that came.

''Doing stuff for the community,'' Trout added, ''it means a lot to me.''
A few hours later, Trout scored twice for the Angels in a 9-8 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The AL Rookie of the Year and runner-up in the MVP voting last season also walked.

''Felt good out there,'' he said. ''Felt like I had a couple good at-bats. Still, timing is not there, but it's the first game. It'll get better.''

Last spring, a lingering illness and shoulder tendinitis kept Trout off the field and forced him to start the 2012
season in Triple-A. He didn't stay there long.

Los Angeles called him up in late-April and Trout blossomed into a superstar. He scored a major league-leading 129 runs, hit .306 with 30 home runs, 83 RBIs and 49 stolen bases.

Now, a healthy Trout is looking forward to getting an exhibition schedule to prepare for the regular season.
''Just to get the timing down,'' he said. ''For me, it's all about timing, seeing pitches.''

Trout led off the game with a single and scored later in the inning when catcher Hank Conger ripped a three-run home run off Seattle starter Jeremy Bonderman. Conger, competing for a reserve role, added a double and single, going 3 for 3 with five RBIs.
T
he 30-year-old Bonderman, trying to secure a spot in Seattle's rotation after missing the past two seasons and undergoing elbow surgery last year, allowed two hits and a walk in his lone inning.
''It wasn't the way I wanted it go, but it was good to get out there and get my feet wet again,'' Bonderman said. ''It was good to get the first one out of the way, but it's no excuse. I have to go out there and get outs.''
Brendan Ryan homered for the Mariners and Justin Smoak doubled and singled. Seattle rallied for seven runs in the final three innings.

NOTES: Smoak Seattle SS Brendan Ryan homered in his first at-bat of the spring and 2B Dustin Ackley tripled in his spring debut. ... LF Jason Bay was 0 for 3, but made an athletic, tumbling catch in the third inning. ... Angels starter Garrett Richards threw two innings, allowing two hits, an unearned run and struck out one. ... RP Chad Cordero, signed two weeks ago to a minor-league contract, threw one inning and allowed the home run to Ryan. Shoulder injuries sidelined the career of the former All-Star, who has not pitched in the majors since 2010. (Yahoo)

Once again Chirs Iannetta has to learn a new pitching staff

http://cdn3.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/796167/20120928_jla_sh2_420.0_standard_352.0.jpg

Not only does Chris Iannetta has to make sure his wrist is 100% strong this spring he also need to learn his new pitchers from starters to relievers. But to be honest I really like Chris as the everyday catcher he is very smart and a very good overall player. I have faith in his ability to call games and he will do good learning each pitcher. I feel the second year with pitchers like Weaver and CJ will really help the team this year. I feel like he has this respect with the pitchers that really helps him call games. O and hit hitting is not to bad either.

Read the Angels Article:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- When Chris Iannetta arrived at Angels camp a year ago he was the new guy. Iannetta was acquired via a trade with the Colorado Rockies and was pegged to be the Angels' starting catcher.

But as the relationship between a pitcher and a catcher is so vital to the success of a pitcher and a baseball team, it was Iannetta's job to develop strong ties with the Angels' rotation -- even if he was the new one.

In 2013, Iannetta, entering his second Spring Training with the Angels, is no longer the new guy, but his spring task has not changed. The club added Tommy Hanson, Jason Vargas and Joe Blanton to the rotation while Sean Burnett and Ryan Madson became new members of the bullpen, and once again Iannetta will spend this time getting to know a new crop of pitchers.

"That's what Spring Training is for," Iannetta said. "It's like any friendship. You start with the 'hello' and you get to know them off the field and in the clubhouse. That translates onto the field and it just keeps getting better every day like any other friendship or relationship in life. You get to know them better the more you're around them." Newly add bullpen having some set backs

http://cdn1.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/4497773/20121003_jla_au3_054.0_standard_352.0.jpg

Ryan Madson and Sean Burnett had some set back during Spring Training but I won't not worried because they will be good for the season. Ryan wont be ready for Opening Day but he will be a force once he comes back. As for Sean Burnett he will be ready to support Scott Downs for Opening Day. I feel like Sean was one of the biggest signing for the Angels because he is a very good reliever that could be a good set up man or a lefty specialist but he is not just a lefty specialist.

Article from Angels website:

MRI on Burnett's back reveals no damage

TEMPE, Ariz. -- An MRI on Sean Burnett's lower back didn't show any structural damage, revealing only the stiffness the Angels anticipated when he left camp early Monday.

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said that stiffness didn't result from any specific bullpen session, just through general soreness. While with the Nationals, the lefty reliever missed a little more than a week with lower-back stiffness in the middle of March, then four games in early April.

The Angels said the tests were done as a precautionary measure and also to get a better read on Burnett's history with the condition.

"We're not anticipating anything dramatic, but we want to be sure," Dipoto said before results were revealed. "Just get a baseline image to know what we're working from with Sean. He came in and he had some back tightness. We'd rather be safe than sorry."

Madson Throws off flat ground

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Potential Angels closer Ryan Madson threw off flat ground for six minutes on Monday morning, picking up a baseball for the first time since being shut down 18 days earlier.

Madson was progressing well from Tommy John surgery, getting in four bullpen sessions prior to the start of camp. But inflammation and soreness from his Feb. 1 session got him off the mound, led to an MRI that came back clean, put him on a strengthening program for about a week and basically forced him to start from scratch.

There's still no telling when he'll get back on the mound.

"He's going to start from the beginning of his throwing program, just activating the arm," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "How long it takes, I don't know, but he won't be throwing a bullpen for a while, until he can get out there and stretch his arm out a little bit. How long that takes, I don't know. But it's not a situation where he's going to throw today and throw a bullpen in a couple days."

Opening Day is essentially out of the question for the 32-year-old right-hander, who missed all of the 2012 season with the Reds after undergoing the ligament-replacement surgery last April. If Madson can start getting into some Spring Training games by the middle of March, though, that could set him up to join the Angels' bullpen at some point in April.

It initially took Madson three months to go from tossing off flat ground to throwing a bullpen session, from September to November. It won't take that long this time. Madson believes he can play catch daily and get back on the mound by the third week, then progress toward eventually pitching in games thereafter.

"But that's just a total guess," he added.

Asked if he can still get into Spring Training games by the middle of March, which was initially the plan, Madson said: "I don't know. I really don't know the pace -- I don't know that they have it lined up. I think it's just play it by ear."(Angels)

Josh Hamilton is getting heat for comments

http://www.trbimg.com/img-511e88ed/turbine/lat-hamilton-wre0008253488-20130213/580/580x429

Again people are over analysing comments said by Josh Hamilton. In TV interview with CBS-11 in Dallas, Josh Hamilton said: "It's one of those things where Texas, especially Dallas, has always been a football town. So the good with the bad is they're supportive, but they also got a little spoiled, at the same time, pretty quickly. You can understand like a really true, true baseball town -- and there are true baseball fans in Texas -- but it's not a true baseball town."

And apparently Dallas got bothered by his comments, however, anyone that has followed Josh knows that he really like playing in Texas and he has nothing but respect for his old playing grounds and he won't disrespect anyone. Josh himself is a very respectable person and people just need to leave him be and not instigate anything.

Article from Angels website:

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Josh Hamilton has caught some heat from a Texas fan base that's still fresh off seeing him slump through the second half and sign with the division-rival Angels the ensuing offseason.
In a Sunday TV interview with CBS-11 in Dallas/Fort Worth, the former Rangers outfielder said: "It's one of those things where Texas, especially Dallas, has always been a football town. So the good with the bad is they're supportive, but they also got a little spoiled, at the same time, pretty quickly. You can understand like a really true, true baseball town -- and there are true baseball fans in Texas -- but it's not a true baseball town."
Hamilton elaborated on those comments after Monday's workout at Angels camp.
"I said there's true baseball fans and then there's others that's not. I said the ones that are true baseball fans won't boo when I come back, and the ones that are not, will. It's just like last year, when I got booed after going 2-for-4 in a game, driving in a couple runs, and I struck out the other two times. You understand the Yankees, Boston, Cubs, Phillies -- baseball towns. If they were doing that, that's one thing. But the Rangers ... "
Hamilton added that by "spoiled," he didn't mean fans were spoiled by his individual play -- more so the entire team, which reached the World Series for the first time in the franchise's 38-year history in Texas in 2010, then got there again the following season.
"It's not saying I don't still appreciate them, and thank you for cheering for me and all that," Hamilton said. "But reality's reality. I think I've always spoken the truth in what I said and not beat around the bush. But I loved my time there."
"There were 3.5 million fans that came through the turnstiles," manager Ron Washington said. "That answers it right there, but I have no comment on Josh's comment."
Hamilton had a great run in Texas, starting five straight All-Star Games, reaching two World Series and establishing himself as one of the game's best outfielders by batting .305 with 142 homers and 506 RBIs from 2008-12.
But it didn't end pretty.
Hamilton slumped mightily in the second half last season, batting .259 and striking out 86 times in 69 games. In the final regular-season game, which the Rangers lost, costing them an American League West division they led by five games with nine to play, Hamilton dropped a routine fly ball in Oakland. Then, after going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts while losing the Wild Card game to the Orioles, he was booed by the home fans.
Hamilton will return to Texas on April 5, when the Angels travel to Rangers Ballpark for their second series of the season.
"We had a good team [in Texas], and they still have a good team," Hamilton said. "But we did some things that had never been done before in Texas, so obviously they want to keep doing those things. They have young guys coming up and they're going to have to get it done."(Angels)

Press Conference Recap

http://www.gannett-cdn.com/media/USATODAY/USATODAY/2013/02/14/c01-base-15-4_3_r536_c534.jpg?1b79b3da202957124496e3768cfb7b67cdb10c81

Against it will now be yesterdays press conference with Josh Hamilton, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols was very neat especially because it was unexpected. I feel like the Angels wanted to get the questions out of the way so the media could be satisfied with being able to ask the three anything they like so that way the players could focus on getting ready for the season.

It was also wonderful to see how the three are getting along and how they interact together. This will be the beginning of a season where they will get to know each other and the will learn how to interact with each other. However, I feel like its a really good that Albert and Josh are very religious which gives them a very strong bond already.

Can't wait for this season to start.

Article From Angels Website:

This is going to be a very different year for Mike Trout because of the expectations, because of the pressure, because of the spotlight. A historic rookie season has set a whole new bar for the prodigy, creating quite a burden for a 21-year-old who was in Triple-A 10 months ago and in high school not long before that.

But as you could see on Thursday afternoon, when he was flanked by Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols in a news conference setting, he has plenty of help.

"We're here to back each other up," Hamilton said. "And there's no expectations anybody's going to put on us that we don't already have on ourselves."

The expectations, though, are big.

Pujols is arguably the greatest hitter of his generation, Hamilton is among the most complete outfielders in the game and Trout is simply baseball's most exciting player. Between them, Hamilton and Pujols boast 14 trips to the All-Star Game, four MVP Awards, nine Silver Slugger Awards and five trips to the World Series. In Trout they have a budding superstar coming off a season in which he was unanimously voted the American League's Rookie of the Year and almost the youngest ever MVP.

Together -- and that's how it'll be for at least the next five years -- they're expected to score lots and lose little.

"It's awesome," Trout said, as he often does, in a conference room at the hotel that overlooks the Angels' Spring Training facility. "I remember last year sitting at the house, and all of a sudden, Albert's name popped up with the Angels, and it was a shock to me. I was like, 'Whoa, this is awesome.' And the same thing happened this year. The first thing I did is [text Hamilton] and congratulated him, and he texted me back and said, 'Get your legs loose.' I'm sure Albert would have said the same thing."

Two different roads

Pujols can still recall what he said the first time he met Hamilton, just after hearing he would soon be the first selection in the Draft: "Yeah, right."

It was 1999, during a pre-Draft workout at Tropicana Field for a Rays team that held the first pick. Hamilton was rail thin and hardly resembled the can't-miss prospect many identified him as out of North Carolina.

"Then he started taking BP," Pujols said, "and I was like, 'Are you serious?'"

Perhaps you can excuse Hamilton for not remembering that moment.

"I took a little different route than Albert did, forgot a few things along the way," Hamilton said, drawing laughter from an assembled media that knows his story well. "But we're here together now."

Pujols became a feel-good story, going from the 402nd pick to three-time National League MVP. Hamilton had an epic fall from grace, from No. 1 overall selection to a harrowing drug addiction that put him out of baseball for three full seasons.

Eventually, Hamilton rose from the ashes, starting five straight All-Star games (2008 to 2012) while with the Rangers.

And this offseason the Angels came out of nowhere to sign him to a five-year, $125 million contract.

"I'd be lying to you if I said it wasn't appealing when [owner] Arte [Moreno] and the Angels approached me to think about the lineup, think about my place in the lineup with these guys," Hamilton said. "Even though it was against the rival Rangers, the biggest thing for my family and I was praying about it and going where the Lord leads us. And we're exactly where he led us."

Hamilton posted a .305/.363/.549 slash line the last five years, averaging 28 homers and 101 RBIs and being named the AL MVP in 2010. But there were also two alcohol-related relapses, an average of 32 games missed due to injuries and, freshest in everyone's mind, a lost second half that saw him bat .259 with 16 homers and 86 strikeouts in 69 games.

"You want to be as consistent as possible the whole year, but it's tough," he said. "That's why it's a lot harder to stay here."

Sharing the spotlight

That same perspective is engrained in Pujols, which is perhaps why his excitement about this group, while real, is tempered.

It was just last year -- in this same room, heading into this first official workout with his new team -- that Pujols addressed the hype surrounding the Angels because of his presence. But then, with his own head-scratching slump, the team fell flat in April and ultimately missed the playoffs for a third straight year.

"We look good on paper," Pujols said of the current group, "but we still need to go out there and perform and stay healthy."

These were Pujols' numbers last year: .285 batting average, .859 OPS, 30 homers.

But there are two very different ways to look at them.

You can notice that each of those numbers has dropped each of the last three years -- perhaps a sign that the 33-year-old continues to slip and an indication that the Angels will be in trouble toward the latter part of his 10-year, $240 million.

You can also consider what he did after May 15 -- .959 OPS, fifth best in the AL -- and think about what he can do going into a season with more familiarity and less spotlight.

"Obviously, it's a different league, and it's going to be a little different now that I know some of the guys I've faced, but I tried to go out there and do too much last year when I started," he said. "I think I can speak for everybody except for [Mark] Trumbo -- he was the only guy that was hitting in April. Everybody else, we were trying to do too much. We knew what type of team we had, we knew we were better than what our record was showing, and sometimes you start to press. That's human nature."

Trout's encore

And while they pressed, the Angels started off 6-14. But Trout wasn't there. This year he will be, as a left fielder, and there will be one prevailing question.

What now?

Is it realistic to expect a season similar to 2012, when Trout became the first player in history -- at any age -- to combine a .320-plus batting average (.326) with at least 45 steals (49), 125 runs (129) and 30 homers?

Is it even fair?

"When I play baseball I just go out there and have fun," Trout said. "I'm not worried about anything else. I go out there and play my game, don't worry about what people think or what they're saying. When I get ready for the game, I don't really think about that stuff. I have one thing on the mind, and that's enjoy the ball game and do anything I can to help the team win. It's tougher some times, but I just go out there and play."

If Trout wants support in dealing with a year of massive expectations, he need only turn to the two guys he was hunched between on this day. Pujols and Hamilton can do a lot for Trout's growth if they're willing to take him under his wing.

But Trout is going to help them, too.

He'll keep them young.

"He motivates me just to come to the ballpark every day and watch him play the game," Pujols said. "He pushes me to that next level."(Angels)

Angels sign Chad Cordero to a minor league deal

http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130213&content_id=41599010&notebook_id=41622830&vkey=notebook_ana&c_id=ana

Although pitchers and catchers already reported to Spring Training, they are still finding ways to built the best ball club. Adding another local guy Chad Cordero

MLB Article:
The Angels agreed to terms on a Minor League contract with former closer Chad Cordero on Wednesday.
The deal, however, does not include a Spring Training invite. So the 30-year-old right-hander will simply report to Minor League camp this weekend.

Cordero last pitched in the Majors in 2010, appearing in nine games for the Mariners, and spent the early part of the 2011 season pitching in the Blue Jays' farm system, posting a 9.89 ERA in 23 2/3 innings. He later began a stint in independent ball, then retired in June of that year and spent 2012 away from baseball.

With the Expos/Nationals from 2004-07, Cordero posted a 2.83 ERA, saved 127 games and made an All-Star team before eventually succumbing to major shoulder surgery. (Angels)

I really like this signing because this will give the Angels a very good low risk high reward player that if he is healthy he will be a very good pitcher. Chad was a very good pitcher that was very dominant as a closer. I'm hoping he gains his All Star form or somewhere close so he could be a part of the Angels bullpen. I don't think he will open the season with the Angels but he might be a very good September call up that will give the Angels a good option down the road. Something that is very optimist about Chad is that he is still pretty young so he should be able to bounce back.

The Angels will be having a live press conference on Feb 14

http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2013-02/74414575.jpg

It will be a nice Valentines present for Angel Fans with a live press conference on Feb 14th12:00pm PST, the MLB Network and Fox Sports West will feature the Angels live press conference with Josh Hamilton, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols.

It will be nice to watch the Angels big bats together and watch how they interact with each other. Also it is nice to be able to see the leaner Josh Hamilton. I will admit Josh looks good when he came in to camp 25lbs thinner then his regular weight. Which will help him with the long season.

Howie is ready to go after off season surgery

http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/0217/fantasy_u_kendrickinl_300.jpg

Usually I'm pretty up to date with the Angels, however, I must admit it was something new when I heard that Howie Kendrick had elbow surgery this offseason. It is good to hear that he is 100% now and ready for spring training.

Article:

Angels manager Mike Scioscia passed along an interesting tidbit to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register this afternoon, as it was revealed that second baseman Howie Kendrick required offseason surgery on his elbow.

While it would be better news if Kendrick didn’t need the surgery at all, the procedure was considered minor and he’s already back to 100 percent. It doesn’t sound like he’ll be restricted at all this spring. (NBC)

Ryan Madson might not be ready for Opening Day

http://www.trbimg.com/img-50f49a9a/turbine/la-sp-0115-angels-ryan-madson-20130115-001/600

Ryan Madson, recovering from Tommy John surgery, suffered a setback during a February bullpen session and is "doubtful" for opening day, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

Madson, 32, suffered a torn UCL in late Feburary last season and didn't appear in a single game for the Reds. He underwent Tommy John surgery on April 11 and was on track to return sometime between opening day and mid-April 2013. Although Madson said such setbacks are often normal for those rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, he's still disappointed and called his chances of returning for the opener "very doubtful."

Madson nearly had a four-year, $44 million deal with the Phillies before the 2012 season, but talks unraveled and he was forced to take a one-year, $8.5 million deal with Cincinnati. After missing the entire 2012 season, he signed an incentive-laden $3.5 million deal to pitch for the Angels in 2013.(CBS)

I don't feel like this is a bad thing because we have depth in the bullpen this year. Also having Frieri to close games at the beginning of the season is not a bad option. I'm very positive that Madson will be pitching this season but I do understand that he will have some tough games at the beginning but overall he will be fine. However, if not he could always be a setup man for Frieri.

Also on a side note I have heard that Frieri learn a new pitch which is a change up. This is a very good pitch for him because he has a very nice fastball and what better pitch then a change up to balance it out.

Nice Article from the LA Times about Mike Trout

http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/02/e9/02e905fabcd9ff3539910d12a20aeef0.jpg

I was able to come across a really nice article on the LA Times that gives a inside look Mike Trout life in Millville, N.J. Something I found really amazing is that he only hit into one double play in his high school career.

LA TIMES:
Mike Trout's fame leads to quite a few claims in south New Jersey

Around south New Jersey, there are plenty of people proud of their connection to Angels star Mike Trout — no matter how tenuous the relationship.
For example, Vaughn Champion was a two-time all-conference pick and two-time team MVP at Absegami High in Galloway. But when visitors stop by the house, the first home video his dad pulls out is the one featuring Mike Trout. Read the Full Article CLICK HERE

Spring is in the Air

Baseball in the air. One day till pitchers and catchers will be reporting to Tempe,Arizona. I was able to go down there to watch the Angels last spring and I must admit it was a very good experience. Everything is very close and you are able to watch the games at a very good price.

Also one thing I really like and advise if you are taking a trip to spring training is to look at the different teams that are playing Arizona and visit the different stadium because they are very  close to each other. You might be able to see a team that usually wont come to the BIG A. For example I went to visit the Dodger/White Sox complex which was like 20 mins from the Angels complex. The Dodgers/White Sox complex is newer and very nice with a very open feeling. You are able to go to the different practice field so you are able to watch all the different players.

Angels finally made it official signing Callaspo to a two-year deal

http://angels.ocregister.com/files/2012/06/Alberto-Callaspo-by-AP.jpg

Took a while for the Angels and Callaspo to make this signing official but not its done with and the Angels could continue their business this off-season. This is not a big signing but one that will pay off for the Angels with some infield depth.

From the Angels:

Alberto Callaspo passed his physical exam, and the Angels finalized their two-year, $8.975 million pact with the veteran third baseman on Tuesday.

Callaspo's deal, which buys out his final season of arbitration and his first year of free agency, was agreed to on Jan. 17, but the 29-year-old switch-hitter had to obtain his visa and fly in from Venezuela to make it official. The contract will pay him $4.1 million in 2013 and $4.875 million in '14, and includes standard awards bonuses.

"We feel Alberto fits our club very nicely, helping to create a natural flow to the lineup," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said via e-mail. "He's a switch-hitter who couples plus defense at third base with a solid bat for average and steady ability to control the strike zone. Frankly, he has a skillset that allows him to contribute in many ways that often fly under the radar, and we're glad to have him on board."

The deal essentially allows the Angels to buy some time with Kaleb Cowart, who they hope is ready to man the hot corner on an everyday basis within the next couple of years.

Cowart, rated the top prospect in the Angels' system and No. 67 overall by MLB.com, is headed into his first season of Double-A. And although the Angels were hoping Cowart would be an everyday player in the Majors by 2014, the much more realistic timeline has the 20-year-old switch-hitter ready by '15.

The switch-hitting Callaspo, 29, has posted .277/.338/.394 line over the past four years, displaying solid defense at third base and an ability to draw walks at the plate, something rather absent from the Angels' lineup.

Callaspo was signed as an amateur free agent by the Angels in 2001, dealt to the D-backs in 2006, then re-acquired from the Royals in July 2010 through a trade that sent Sean O'Sullivan and Will Smith to Kansas City. While making $3.15 million this past season, Callaspo batted .252 with a .331 on-base percentage, 10 homers and 56 walks, the second most on the team.

All nine of the Angels' everyday players are now signed through 2014, with the remaining eight -- Chris Iannetta, Albert Pujols, Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar, Mike Trout, Peter Bourjos, Josh Hamilton and Mark Trumbo –- in the books for at least the next three years.

"There's benefit -- most notably cost and positional certainty that allows for both present and future roster planning -- and risk -- always the threat of injury," Dipoto wrote. " At the end of the day, the most significant benefit is having productive players who stay healthy and fit together, both on the field and in the clubhouse. We feel like this group gives us that opportunity."(Angels)

Be ready to purchase your individual tickets for this season because football is over and Opening Day is just around the corner. Angels tickets go on sale to the general public on Feb 23 at 9am. Season ticket holders have a chance to get tickets starting Feb 20 at 10am. I feel like the Opening Day tickets are going to be hard to come by if last year was any sign to things to come.

From Angels Website:

Individual tickets for Angels games will go on sale Feb. 23, beginning at 9 a.m. PT, the club announced Monday.
Fans can purchase them online at angels.com, at the Angel Stadium Ticket Office (located at the Home Plate Gate), by phone (800-745-3000) and at various Ticketmaster locations throughout Southern California. The ticket windows are open until 5:30 p.m., with a maximum purchase limit of 12 tickets per person, per game.
Angels season tickets, mini-plans, single-game suite rentals and group tickets can be purchased at angels.com, by contacting 888-796-HALO (4256), or by speaking with an Angels representative at the ballpark on Feb. 23.
Upon returning from Tempe, Ariz., the Angels will finish Spring Training with a three-game series against the Dodgers. The Angels will host the games on March 28 and 30, with the middle game coming at Dodger Stadium. They then open up the regular season with a six-game road trip to Cincinnati and Arlington before their home opener against the A's on April 9 at 7:05 p.m.

Torii looking back on his time with the Angels

http://www.trbimg.com/img-510ce1eb/turbine/la-sp-torii-hunter-slam-20130202/580/580x410

The LA Times had a very good article about Hunter and his time with the Angels. The article brings you back to some great moments that remind you how good Torii was in a Angel uniform. I honestly really think that the Angels will miss his personality and his leadership in the club house, however, I do feel the Angels will be fine.

As Torii Hunter reflected on his five seasons with the Angels — a span in which he hit .286 with 105 homers and 432 runs batted in — two events, an individual accomplishment and a team achievement, stood out.

The first came at the end of his first week as an Angel, on April 7, 2008, when Hunter hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and followed Francisco Rodriguez's blown save in the top of the ninth with a walk-off grand slam against the Cleveland Indians.

Hunter circled the bases, leaped into a pile of humanity and was pummeled by his new teammates. Then, he made his first curtain call in Angel Stadium.

"That was the first game I made an impact, the first time the fans got to know me," Hunter, 37, said during a recent interview at his home in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. "When I turned around third and all my teammates were waiting for me, I jumped up and I was like, 'All right, this is home.'"

The second was on Sept. 28, 2009, when the Angels, six months after 22-year-old pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in an automobile accident, clinched the American League West with a win over Texas at home.

As part of their celebration, the Angels jogged en masse to the center-field wall, where a picture of Adenhart pitching had been affixed since the tragic crash. Players bowed their heads, tapped Adenhart's face, and some poured beer over his head.

"That's something I'll never forget," Hunter said. "We struggled for a few weeks after Nick died — we fought, we had arguments — but it eventually brought us closer together. As a team, we bonded. Nick was a good dude, good kid."

The Angels won 100 games in 2008, Hunter's first year in Anaheim after signing a five-year, $90-million deal, and after acquiring slugger Mark Teixeira from Atlanta that July, they looked like World Series contenders.

"That was an awesome squad," Hunter said, "the best team I've ever been a part of."

Until the playoffs. The Angels lost to Boston in a division series marred by Erick Aybar's failed suicide-squeeze attempt, the pivotal play in the Red Sox's series-clinching Game 4 victory and a call that Manager Mike Scioscia may never live down.

The Angels won their third straight AL West title in 2009 and vanquished their longtime October nemesis, sweeping the Red Sox in the division series before losing to the New York Yankees in a six-game AL championship series.

But the next three Octobers were dark for the Angels, and when Hunter signed a two-year, $26-million deal with Detroit in November, he left a trail of unfinished business.

"I really wanted to win a championship there and go to the playoffs more than two times, so in that respect I failed," said Hunter, a right fielder who hit .313 with 16 homers and 92 RBIs last season. "That's what I regret, that we didn't win a championship with those guys."

Hunter, a 14-year veteran, has never played in a World Series, and he feels his career won't be complete without a championship. He's convinced the defending AL-champion Tigers will give him the best shot to win a title.

But even if he doesn't win a ring, Hunter's story — his rise from a poor family, which included a drug-addicted and mostly absent father, in Pine Bluff, Ark., to become a major leaguer who would make $150 million in his career — has been remarkable.

"It's definitely a blessing, a dream come true," Hunter said. "I had a daddy on drugs, we didn't always have food, the lights were cut off. … We didn't have much, but we had love and a roof over our heads. I tell that to all the kids who are going through the same thing, that you can do it. You just have to believe you can.

"A lot of kids are broken, and it's hard for them to believe in anything. But you have to have an imaginative mind and tell yourself, 'Hey, I can do whatever I want to.' I tell kids to have dreams, have goals, and believe in them because if you have any doubt, worry or fear, it will choke the life out of your dreams and goals." (LA Times)

Angels sign Japanese reliever Kobayashi to Minors deal

http://www.trbimg.com/img-510b193c/turbine/la-sp-sn-angels-sign-pitcher-hiroyuki-kobayash-001/580/580x338

Angels are still staying very busy during the off-season adding minor league depth by signing Japanese reliever Kobayashi. This is a very nice back up if there is a need for a new arm in the pen. He will also bring experience for the September call up to give some good effective inning late in the season.

from the Angels:

The Angels have agreed to terms with Japanese reliever Hiroyuki Kobayashi on a Minor League contract with a Spring Training invite, a source confirmed late Thursday. Kobayashi has posted a 3.53 ERA through 12 seasons in Japan. After seven years as a full-time starter, the 34-year-old right-hander was moved to the Chiba Lotte Marines' bullpen in 2010 and thrived, posting a 2.21 ERA and 29 saves. After not securing a Major League deal, Kobayashi moved to the Hanshin Tigers in 2011 and posted a 3.00 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 19 walks in 39 innings, then spent the 2012 season pitching in Japan's Industrial League. The Kobayashi signing -- still pending a physical -- comes a day after the team signed veteran infielder Bill Hall to a Minor League deal, putting its list of camp invites at 64. (Angels)

Omar Vizquel is coming to the Angels

http://www2.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Omar+Vizquel+Minnesota+Twins+v+Toronto+Blue+PwkX17dkmfNl.jpg

Angels have added another big name to their organization, Omar Vizquel is coming to Anaheim. However, not as a player but as a  infield instructor. Who else better to teach the Angels infielders then  11 Gold Gloves winner himself.

I am very excited that the Angels got him because he has been one of the best infielders in my generation. He will really help Aybar and Kendrick during the spring as well as everyone else.

From the Angels:

"It's a great presence that he brings," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said, "and it comes from his accomplishments -- a long career that we believe culminates in the Hall of Fame. We're thrilled to have him."
Dipoto and Vizquel go back to their time together with the Indians in 1994 and even a stint of winter ball in Vizquel's native Venezuela. But the hiring, which was finalized Tuesday, was mainly the inspiration of roving hitting instructor Paul Sorrento -- who played alongside Vizquel for two years in Cleveland, resides in the same city (Seattle) and reached out to him recently about starting his coaching trek in the Angels' farm system.
Last year, Vizquel spent the season as a 45-year-old reserve infielder with the Blue Jays and spoke openly about one day becoming a Major League manager.
This, at least, is a start.
"He was gung ho; he was all for it," Dipoto said. "We're fortunate to have him. I feel like this is the start of a next great career for Omar Vizquel, and we're glad he's doing it as an Angel. We're pretty pumped about him being involved."
Vizquel takes over the role previously held by Dick Schofield, whose contract wasn't renewed. Vizquel essentially teams up with a more experienced Bobby Knoop, the 74-year-old ex-Angels infielder who was previously brought back as a special assignment infield coach.
Knoop is expected to oversee while Vizquel will be more hands-on.
It will start at Major League camp in Tempe, Ariz., around mid-February. Vizquel will switch to the Minor League side around early March, then bounce around the Angels affiliates when the season begins.
And he'll bring Hall of Fame credentials with him: 11 Gold Gloves, three All-Star Game appearances and 2,877 hits in a career that spanned 24 seasons.
"Omar had the best timing, or internal clock, of any infielder I ever watched," Dipoto said. "I don't know if he can pass on the internal clock, but he can pass on a lot of the little tips and nuances, and at the end of the day, we feel like he's the type of guy who can really go in and make a difference in a young player's career. And I'm excited to see where he goes with it."(Angels)

Angels sign avoiding arbitration Kevin Jepsen and sign right-hander Robert Coello

http://www.trbimg.com/img-510846fb/turbine/la-sp-sn-angels-kevin-jepsen-20130129-001/600http://cdn1.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/7280109/20120624_jla_su8_130.0_standard_352.0.jpg

I am happy to see that the Angels are taking care of business this off-season, not only by signing free agents but by avoiding arbitration with their young players. This will assure that the Angels will have good relationships with their players.

The Angels settled on a 2013 contract with relief pitcher Kevin Jepsen on Tuesday, thus avoiding arbitration with any of their eligible players.

Jepsen, who was in his first year of arbitration, will make $1,181,250 in 2013. When the two sides exchanged figures on Jan. 18, the 28-year-old asked for $1.4 million and the Angels countered with $975,000. (Angels)

Also the Angels add depth to their system by adding right-hander Robert Coello to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training on Monday.
Coello, 28, appeared in six games in 2010 for the Red Sox and six for the Blue Jays in '12, giving up 12 earned runs in 12 innings. With the Angels, he'll probably be a swing man in Triple-A. In his six-year Minor League career, which began with a stint for the Angels' Arizona League team in 2007, Coello has compiled a 3.33 ERA in 171 games (31 starts), posting a rate of 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings, 3.9 walks per nine innings and a 1.23 WHIP.
Listed at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Coello spent most of last season pitching for the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate, going 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 19 games (three starts). (Angels)

Vernon Wells is Ready for His Role This Season

http://specials-images.forbes.com/imageserve/0bGr1RX7yK6Sh/620x434.jpg?fit=scale&background=000000

On Monday,Wells was on “Angels Talk”  AM 830 KLAA hosted by Victor Rojas and Terry Smith.

He was asked about the past couple of years and how he was hurt:

Wells Replied:
“I think that’s just part of the process. I don’t think it matters where you are in your career. You’re going to have some frustrating times, and unfortunately the last couple years have been frustrating, not only for myself, but for a lot of outsiders also. I think that’s what the off seasons are for, to kind of get a chance to regroup and refocus, and I think the thing for me moving forward is I have to be comfortable. I have to just relax and go play the game like I did when I was a kid. I don’t think I’ve done that as much as I’ve needed to.”

Wells was asked about coming off the bench this upcoming season:
“I think every athlete prefers just to be in the best shape they can and for whatever’s thrown at him in Spring Training. I don’t know exactly what the role is going to be. I think it’s been documented what it could be. But for me, as a competitor, you have to go in and be ready to fight. I think that’s what everyone wants to do and everybody’s going to do, because in order for this team to achieve what it needs to, everyone has to be thinking that way.”

On whether the trade rumors have bothered him …
“No, not at all. I put myself in that position, so I can’t get mad about it. I think that’s pretty obvious. You live and you learn. I’ve enjoyed my last two years, even though it’s been frustrating at times, but everything you go through you learn from it, and sometimes it takes a month, sometimes it takes a year, and sometimes it takes two years to kind of get everything straightened out. But I like the opportunity I’m going to get, and I’m going to run with whatever they tell me to do.”

On whether he’d prefer to go to a team with a more prominent role …
“I want to play, and I want to play for the Angels. But I have to earn that. That’s an easy question to answer. I want to be an Angel and I want to play. If I don’t get the opportunity to play, then obviously I need to continue to work harder because I still want to wear the uniform. I want to be able to really show what I can do, and I haven’t been able to do that the last couple of years. There’s still a lot to show some Angel fans. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to do that, and if I don’t get it, then so be it.” (MLB)

Tune in to the MLB Network to Watch a Special on th Angels

Don't miss a very special show on the MLB Network tomorrow at 10am PT to watch the greatest moments in Angels history.

CJ Wilson is getting ready for Spring Training

http://www.trbimg.com/img-5029f29c/turbine/la-sp-sn-angels-wilson-20120813-001/600

After having surgery on the left elbow, CJ has been throwing even before Christmas. Lets hope he comes strong because he is expected to be the number 2 starter this year.

“I have normal extension again,” Wilson said Tuesday at Occidental College, where he was appearing with Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price and Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez at an MLB 2K13 video game commercial shoot.
“Before, I could only bend it, stretch it up to around 30%.”(LA Times)

It is very good to hear that CJ feels good because without him the Angels will have a hard time competing with the powerhouses in the AL. He needs to return to his Texas Ranger shape when he was their number 1.

The Angels have been very active this off seasons making sure they get their arbitration eligible players taken care of and making sure they get the missing pieces for next year.

From the Angels website:
The Angels and Alberto Callaspo have agreed to terms on a two-year contract worth close to $9 million, with the club buying out the third baseman's final arbitration season and his first year of free agency, sources told MLB.com on Thursday (Angels)

This will be a nice signing to be able to let Kaleb Cowart get seasoned to step in and take over as a everyday 3rd basemen. I am hoping with in 2 years he will be ready.

Erick Aybar will be Playing for WBC

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim shortstop Erick Aybar and right-handed pitcher Fernando Cabrera have been selected to participate. Aybar is slated to play for the Dominican Republic team and Cabrera for the Puerto Rico team. (MLB)
I hope that this will give Erick Aybar gain confidence to be able to take over the 2 spot in the batting order now that Hunter is in Detroit.
